Diego Simeone believes Atletico Madrid deserved their 2-1 win over Sevilla on Thursday, even if the Cup tie remains at ’50-50’.

Atleti secured the win in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg thanks to two penalties from Diego Costa.

Meanwhile, Sevilla also picked up their away goal from a spot-kick in a game that also saw three red cards, two for the visitors.

“The result is fair and deserved because we finished the game well, it was a good match,” commented Simeone at full-time.

“We were at our best in the first half and then after the reaction to their equaliser in the second. But, for Sevilla’s goal, we conceded because we were in a rush to score at the other end.

“The tie is now 50-50 for each team.

“The penalties? They were all adjudged to apparently be handballs. And on the cards I cannot judge.”

Simeone picked out notable performers from the game.

“It was a game for Cebolla Rodriguez, he neutralised the numerical advantage in midfield and also caused a penalty.

“Adrian and Diego Costa played great games. Adrian in terms of being unselfish and Diego by way of transmitting a force in an important game and converted two penalties in a single game, which isn’t easy.”
