Vela turns down Mexico

Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela has turned down the opportunity to represent Mexico 'for personal reasons'.

Jose Manuel de la Torre's side will play Denmark next Wednesday in a friendly and then face Jamaica a week later in World Cup qualifying.

But the 23-year-old, who is the Erreala's top goalscorer this season, has turned down the chance to play for the national team, preferring instead to stay with his club.

“I talked to the Coach and had a nice and clear conversation,” he told reporters. “The boss asked me how I was, and I said fine.

“I love my country and always will do. I just haven't gone because of personal reasons.”

He then commented on his side's win over Barcelona last weekend.

“The win over them last time out shows that this team wants to achieve big things. We have to start being more consistent though.”
