‘Aguirre was the shock needed’

Joan Capdevila has praised Mexican Coach Javier Aguirre for his impact in turning around Espanyol’s situation.

Victory over Mallorca at the weekend has moved the club up to 15th in the League table, three points clear of the relegation zone that they have otherwise occupied for a majority of the first half of the campaign.

“Aguirre has been a needed shock for the team, he is the ideal person for this club,” commented veteran full-back Capdevila to reporters this week.

“I do not want to compare him with Pochettino, though. With the previous Coach things did not work and the club decided to make a change.

“It is not a case, though, that one is better than the other. As players we have adapted to the different philosophies.

“We have now moved out of the relegation zone. We are steadily progressing up the table and this is the best way.

“We cannot talk of European qualification right now, though, at all. We have 10 games remaining on the road and eight at home, we have still achieved nothing.

“Is our game too simple now? We’re not playing great football but it is practical. The Coach has told us to get out of the mud.

“Eventually no-one will remember if we played well or not, but we will pick up the points.”
