‘Ref didn’t favour anyone’

Ricardo Carvalho has dismissed Valencia’s protests that referee Muniz Fernandez influenced Real Madrid’s Cup win on Tuesday.

The capital side recorded a 2-0 first leg win in the first quarter-final of the week at the Bernabeu, but Los Che were angered by several decisions they felt went against them.

Roberto Soldado was called offside on three tight occasions, whilst Carvalho appeared to have handled the ball in the penalty area at one stage, before Gonzalo Higuain also apparently handled in the build-up to the second goal.

“The referee has not favoured anyone,” commented Carvalho at full-time, before concluding on the result.

“They’ve had chances and we also were able to score a third goals. I knew it was okay for me to play in the game because that is why I have trained every day.

“The result is not definitive. Although it has been important to not concede a goal, we could have done more. Now we have to score in Valencia to make the tie easier.

“The future? We have to go game by game. Winning in the Cup and also needing to be more consistent in the League.”
