Messi: This is unbelievable

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has described winning the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2012 as ‘unbelievable.’

The Argentine has been recognised as the world’s best player yet again and will have to make room on his mantelpiece for a fourth Golden Ball, adding this year’s honour to those won in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barca’s Andres Iniesta finished second and third respectively.

“To tell you the truth this is quite unbelievable,” he declared on stage at the Ballon d’Or gala. “The fourth award that I’ve had..it’s too great for words. I would like to recognise my other colleagues from Barcelona. Iniesta, it’s been a great honour to be alongside you, not only today but to train alongside you and play alongside you.

“I would also like to recognise all of my friends from the Argentinean national team, and just everybody that’s been involved with me, coaches and staff.”

2012 was a particularly special year for Messi with the birth of his son Thiago and he saved his final tribute to him and wife Antonella.

“I want to thank my friends and family, and especially my wife and son, who is the nicest thing God has gave me.”
