Optimistic Espanyol look to Barca trip

Espanyol’s pre-Christmas improvement will aid them when they return to action against Barcelona, says midfielder Victor Sanchez.

Los Pericos beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 this time last week, capping a four game unbeaten run, but must travel to Camp Nou for the Barcelona derby in their next fixture a week on Sunday.

“We must return to training with power, and recent results will help us to meet the forthcoming commitments with optimism,” commented Sanchez in an interview with the club’s website.

“We must continue on this line and try to score against Barcelona. It will be a long season and we have to continue fighting. We’re still in the relegation zone, but the differences are minimal and there are several teams involved.

“We know we must do our best. The victory against Depor gave us three very important points, because they are a direct rival and we needed to finish the year with a win.”

Javier Aguirre’s side are currently 18th with 15 points, a matter of one goal adrift of 17th placed Celta Vigo.
