Barca Ballon d’Or invite for Pep

Barcelona have reportedly invited former Coach Pep Guardiola to attend the Ballon d’Or gala with them.

The event, which takes place on January 7, sees Guardiola in competition with Spain’s Vicente del Bosque and Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho for the Coach of the Year award.

The Blaugrana are said by Mundo Deportivo to have made the offer because Guardiola is nominated for the work he did with Barca last season, winning the Copa del Rey before making way for Tito Vilanova in the summer.

Two of Guardiola’s ex-players, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta, are in the running to win the Golden Ball.

The former midfielder, currently on sabbatical in New York, is apparently yet to respond to the offer but will return to Catalonia at some point during the festive period.

Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta dismissed speculation earlier this week that the club had contacted Guardiola to fill in for Vilanova whilst his former assistant undergoes treatment for cancer.
