Playing for Barca ‘a prize’

Javier Mascherano has reflected that playing for Barcelona feels to him like he has ‘won a prize’, whilst he has also revealed his best moment with the club.

The 28-year-old is in his third season with Barca but has revealed that the novelty of playing for the Catalans has not worn off.

“Playing here is like winning a prize –it’s a blessing,” he told fans in an interactive interview via the club’s official website this week.

“My best moment here so far? In the two years that I have been at Barca, if I had to choose just one…the Champions League Final at Wembley.

“With Liverpool I got to a final, but we lost to Milan and I never thought at that moment that I would have another chance.”

The Argentine also revealed who he admired most when developing as a footballer.

“When I was young I tried to copy Claude Makelele because I thought he was one of the best defensive midfielders around.

“I always tried to watch him, to learn and also I have had the chance to play games against him when I was at Liverpool and he was at Chelsea.”

Mascherano was also asked of his swapping positions from defensive midfield to centre-back during his time at the Camp Nou.

“Obviously I took the chance – you have to grab them when they come up in football – I couldn’t let it pass and I think it was the right decision.”
