Diaz: Atleti want to win a title

Atletico Madrid defender Daniel ‘Cata’ Diaz is hoping Coach Diego Simeone stays at the club for a long time.

The summer arrival from Getafe hasn’t seen much action this season but that didn’t stop him giving compatriot Simeone a glowing endorsement at a media briefing this afternoon.

“I think Simeone has proved his worth with numbers and titles,” opined Diaz. “He changed the mentality of all the players and it shows on the field and in the locker room.

“I do not think his renewal is in question. The team is well and the players believe in the project.”

The 33-year-old Argentine was gracious when asked about the men keeping him out the team.

“There are always reasons to complain, but at this moment Joao Miranda and Diego Godin are doing fine. The team is fine, I expect the opportunity to come at some time and I will answer. I’ve came from another team where I always played, but I have to keep working.”

Diaz also discussed the possibility of deputising for the injured Filipe Luis at left back, as he did in the 4-1 loss to Barcelona on Sunday.

“It felt a little strange to be playing at fullback but the Coach and the team needed me there. We have not discussed anything, but I will try to do my best so his absence is not noticed.

“I don’t know if it will be the league or not, but we want to win a title. There are rivals with weapons, but we must handle our business.”

Atleti take on Celta Vigo at the Vicente Calderon this Friday.
