Castro wants 30 pts for Christmas

Getafe midfielder Diego Castro is refusing to get carried away despite the Azulones ascent of the La Liga table.

Luis Garcia Plaza’s side are up to 6th after last weekend’s shock 1-0 win over Malaga, whose Coach Manuel Pellegrini described Getafe as contenders for Champions League qualification.

“We appreciate his words,” the 30-year-old is quoted as saying by Marca. “But we see that today, it’s still unrealistic. You have to go game by game, as predictable and repetitive as it sounds.

“Whenever we talk about Europe, things don’t go well, we lose two in a row. Our idea is to be well placed during the last days of the season, but it’s clear that the likes of Valencia and Sevilla will be up there. We want to reach 30 points before the Christmas break.”

The former Sporting Gijon man also looked forward to next week’s Copa del Rey last 16 first leg against Atletico Madrid.

“They are a team with a Coach who is a great motivator. They could potentially win titles, maybe not the league, where there are Barcelona and Real Madrid to contend with, but in the Cup a team like them could win.

“They are a rival that can put us in much difficulty, but this tie could mark the evolution of our team.”
