Casado: Rayo hold European hope

Jose Manuel Casado has made clear that Rayo Vallecano are not getting carried away, but the hint of European qualification is what is motivating them.

Rayo currently sit in 10th position in the table after 14 rounds of action, but for their left-back, eyes are only looking up.

“We like to keep our feet on the ground, but as the days go by we are seeing that it is possible to think a little higher,” reflected Casado after training today.

“I never like to target the Europa League or Champions League, though, because the first thing is always to get to 42 points, but what happens is that circumstances say we are closer to Europe than the relegation zone and that provides an incentive to keep working and fighting.”

The next game to test Rayo’s credentials comes with Week 15’s Monday night match at home to Real Zaragoza.

“Zaragoza are a direct rival of ours in the League. Here in Vallecas we are safe, we have some big games and only against the big two [and Sevilla] did we not take all three points.

“I think it will be a tough game, like each game, but we have to worry about ourselves only and have 100 per cent intensity, with which we believe we can win.”
