Manchester United would like Pep Guardiola to succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson as manager, according to reports in the British Press.

The Premier League club have been linked with the former Barcelona boss and Jose Mourinho over the past few months, but the Sunday Mirror has claimed that the Red Devils would prefer the Spaniard.

Guardiola is seen as less controversial, the weekend tabloid has reported, and would be a safer bet in terms of personality and character off the field.

A spate of recent clashes with media and fans in Madrid, have seen the Portuguese Coach climb down the pecking order at Old Trafford, who they believe would not be able to maintain the stability that already exists at the club.
