Pochettino exit confirmed

Espanyol have finally confirmed the departure of Coach Mauricio Pochettino after a day of intense talks in Barcelona.

Pochettino’s exit has been something of an open secret since this morning. The Argentine’s position has been undermined by a dreadful campaign in La Liga thus far, Los Pericos taking just nine points from 13 games to sit bottom of the division.

“This afternoon the club and the Coach have agreed by mutual consent to terminate the agreement that unites them,” read a statement. “Ramon Planes ceases to function as sporting director, having also reached an agreement of termination.”

Pochettino had spent two spells at Espanyol as a player and been on their bench since 2009. He met with success in the early days of his tenure but his job was made more difficult by budget cuts and player sales.

The favourite to take over is former Atletico Madrid boss Javier Aguirre.
