Mel: Betis deserve forgiveness

Real Betis boss Pepe Mel archived last week’s derby disaster and talked Europe after his side’s shock defeat of Real Madrid.

The Verdiblancos recovered from their 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Sevilla with a 1-0 win at home to the reigning champions. Benat Extebarria struck the winner after a difficult week in which the players were taunted by fans at training.

“The past is the past, let’s not talk about the derby,” Mel told journalists. “I have to congratulate the players and the fans, who had great merit.”

Mel’s side are now fifth with 22 points, just four less than Madrid.

“We have 22 points now and being in Europe is a dream. In the end we got the three points and we regard the table with joy. The players deserve to be forgiven. We’re capable of being spectacularly s*** then beating the best team in the world.

“We have the tranquillity of being away from the relegation zone with a team that is growing.”

Mel was congratulated at full time by Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho.

“It was very close and friendly. He congratulated us and wished us a good season.”
