Benat ‘comfortable and confident’

Benat Etxebarria is happy at Athletic Bilbao despite the intense competition for places in Ernesto Valverde’s starting XI.

The midfielder has enjoyed a run of games in recent weeks as Athletic have gone four unbeaten in all competitions, winning three and drawing one, although League wins outside San Mames are still few and far between.

“In truth I’m comfortable and confident. I’m enjoying it on the pitch and what really matters to me is to help the team and I’m getting to do that,” Benat said, Marca reports.

“Although we have a big squad, and we know that at any time someone else can play and play just as well or better.

“We have chances and we’re not playing badly away from home, but we’ve not had that bit of luck that will bring three points. We have to keep working and eventually the wins will arrive.”

Athletic’s next game pits them against Benat’s former team, Real Betis, and he spoke warmly of the Seville side.

“For me it’s a special match because Betis gave me the opportunity to be what I am and I’m very grateful,” he acknowledged.

“I’m in contact [with Jorge Molina and Ruben Castro] but we don’t just talk about the game, it’s also to see how they’re doing personally.”
