Lionel Messi has told reporters today who he has voted for in the 2012 Ballon d’Or contest, as he hopes one of his teammates picks it up.
The forward, who is chasing Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year, spoke today at a publicity event and reflected on his voting for FIFA’s annual award.
“I voted and I will say who for – Xavi, Iniesta and Aguero,” revealed the Argentine, favourite for a fourth consecutive Ballon d’Or himself and who can cast his vote as captain of his national team.
“I would not vote for myself. I would be happy if Xavi or Iniesta won. I would never have won the Golden Boot without my teammates.”
Messi was again asked of his sentiment towards Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I do not compete against him. I just try to do my best with Barca and with Argentina.
“The rivalry is something for journalists and reporters. Whenever possible you try to compare our numbers.”
The player is currently in the early stages of contract talks with Barcelona and looked to make clear that there is nothing to be concerned about over nothing being signed yet.
“My contract does not worry me, there is no problem. I know exactly what I want, I have no problem with that issue.”
