Pochettino: Elections damaged image

Mauricio Pochettino believes Espanyol need a good performance against Getafe next weekend to repair their image worldwide.

Los Periquitos are at the beginning of a new era after Joan Collet was appointed club President on Monday, but the elections proved to be an acrimonious and controversial affair, with Collet and his predecessor Ramon Condal jeered by shareholders.

“This game is very important,” said the Argentine tactician at a media engagement. “It is essential, especially after the elections and the image that we gave to Spain, Europe and the rest of the world. It was a sad night for Espanyol.

“Throughout all of our history we have shown that when we are united we can move forward. We have more than a hundred years of history to prove it. The club needs all of us.

“I want the Cornella-El Prat to be a fortress once again, one that is scary for opponents, which gives us that extra energy. I’m a fighter, but we know what matters is the results.”

Pochettino also stressed that he has the ‘absolute confidence’ of the new board, a point reiterated by spokesman Rafael Entrena in a separate Press conference.

“The message we have to give clearly and strongly is that we have every confidence in Pochettino. The team’s position is not in tune with how they have played so far. This period has been a bit tricky but we are looking forward. It hurts that the President could not leave in an orderly manner, because he deserved it.”

Espanyol, currently bottom with nine points, take on Getafe on Sunday at the Cornella-El Prat.
