Varane: I’m making my mark

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has expressed his joy at becoming a regular starter for the Merengues this season.

The young Frenchman has made seven starts for Real already this season, three of them in the Champions League.

“We have won titles and I've been leaving my mark on the games,” he told club sponsors Bwin. “I've seen the positive side of things, and also the dimensions of how big the club is. The happiest moments of my career are starting as a professional with Lens and winning titles with Real Madrid.”

Varane also spoke of his gratitude to boss Jose Mourinho, and how it felt to inherit the no. 2 jersey, worn in the past by Christian Panucci and Michel Salgado amongst others.

“Mourinho has given me many things, he trusts me and allows me to express myself. He has taught me the requirements of elite sport and all that entails.

“It is a responsibility for me, but I'm happy to wear this number. Very proud.”

The 19-year-old concluded with an assessment of this Sunday's La Liga fixture versus Levante.

“It will be a difficult game. We know we are a good team but we must be attentive. It will be a very physical game.”
