Del Bosque: Best squad for occasion

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has defended the RFEF's decision to play a friendly in Panama and discussed his squad choices.

The strategist has selected a experimental group for the game next week that includes recalled Juan Mata and uncapped Markel Susaeta but not senior squad members like David Silva and Fernando Torres.

“We do not want to go against any club, but we have a commitment to challenge Panama and we went with those we feel are best for the occasion,” Del Bosque told members of the media.

“All the teams in the world are playing on this date. When we play in Europe we arrive at five in the morning, without sleeping. But when we go to the Americas we are properly rested.”

The former Real Madrid tactician made his squad announcement in Tenerife, and had some complimentary words for local boy Pedro Rodriguez.

“He has good character and has always been a very disciplined guy.”

Del Bosque admitted he'd like to see a Spaniard win the Ballon d'Or.

“We have a deadline to vote by the 15th of this month. I will take my time but certainly, our desire is to see a Spanish player win.”
