‘Sacking Montanier is not the answer’

Real Sociedad President Jokin Aperribay has publicly backed under fire boss Philippe Montanier, saying sacking him is not the answer.

The Basques were beaten 1-0 at home by Espanyol last weekend, with a section of the crowd reserving their chants and whistles to protest against the Frenchman.

Even so, Aperribay told EFE that the solution to the problem is not in getting rid of the 47-year-old former Valenciennes boss.

“To sack Montanier would be the easiest and cheaper option but it would not solve Real Sociedad’s problems, although we need to and must do better.

“Montanier is strong and committed and is not some alien from outside our organisation,” he insisted, while saying the absence through injury of David Zurutuza and Antoine Griezmann has not helped.

However, Aperribay believes November will see an upturn in form and even predicted the Txuri-urdin will confidently dispose of Cordoba in the Copa del Rey despite a 2-0 first-leg away defeat.

“The team will eliminate Cordoba and performances will improve over the next few weeks. I don’t know any player who does not want to play in Europe and is happy when he loses.

“We now have three home games and travel away to Malaga and Valencia, where last year we drew and won, and we owe our fans because they always give more than they receive,” he added.
