Pellegrino: Valencia were smart

Mauricio Pellegrino is delighted that his side secured all three points against Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.

Los Che ended Atleti’s run of 13 consecutive wins in all competitions and became the first team to beat them in almost seven months with a 2-0 result at Mestalla in Week 10.

“We knew it would be a tough match against a team with a great track record and we have worked hard,” commented the Argentine after the game.

“We controlled Falcao well and we have been smart, but the game was not pretty. In addition, the support has been excellent.

“When you score a goal, you don’t want to lose the game, but a team like Atletico will create problems for you. We have now won four of the last five and now we have to improve on the road.”

The tactician explained that he was dismissed for throwing down a water bottle in anger.

“There was an uncontrollable situation. We were warned that referees are going to be very strict in their standards, but it is something that should be applied by all.”
