Varane believes in Real back-line

Raphael Varane has confidence in himself and the makeshift Real Madrid defence he is playing in to progress forwards.

Los Blancos are without full-backs Fabio Coentrao, Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo through injury for the immediate future but Varane is assured of the replacement defence, having played in it on Saturday evening at home to Celta Vigo.

“I have confidence, I feel good physically and I think that we played well,” commented the young Frenchman, who stepped in at centre-back as Sergio Ramos deputised alongside Michael Essien on the flanks.

“I think we have done well because we conceded no goals. We are happy. We played against a team that was playing on the counter-attack and that was compact in defence.

“It was hard getting ourselves going after the international break, but I think we played well. We have to win [in midweek at Borussia Dortmund] in order to continue the positive momentum of the team.”
