‘This is Espanyol’s turning point’

Mauricio Pochettino is not thinking about what might happen if Espanyol don’t win this weekend, instead labelling the weekend as a turning point.

The Catalans are without a win all season and host Rayo Vallecano on Sunday afternoon. For Pochettino, the message is again only positive.

“The players are suffering and feel accountable, but they deserve to get three points for their daily work and their effort in the games,” he reiterated to reporters today.

“Rayo should be a turning point for us, an important beginning. The players know they have an important game here and they will face it with all the enthusiasm to do things right.

“However, they also need to control their levels of anxiety.”

Pochettino was asked of his own emotions going into the game and if he is feeling any pressure for his future in the job.

“I’m fine, I want to pick up the first victory. We are in full force, the team is alive and wanting to achieve the ambition of three points.

“I do not think about what might happen if we lose, what has to be, will be.”

The Coach had a curious response to being asked of opponents Rayo’s better start to the season. the Madrid side sit 10th, with 10 points to their name.

“At the start of the season, what is merited is not equal [for each team] because each goes through periods of greater and lesser success.

“I believe that conclusions should always be taken at the end of the season.”
