Barca won’t dip into market

Barcelona will not be making a move in the January transfer market to solve their defensive headache.

The Catalans have been fielding Alex Song alongside Javier Mascherano at centre-back at times this season, having otherwise struggled to have a fit Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique available.

A third consecutive injury for Puyol this season that has ruled him out of the next eight weeks of action is matched by reports of Pique’s longer-than-expected rehabilitation from his injury suffered last month.

However, Coach Tito Vilanova and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta are reported by Mundo Deportivo to be in agreement that bringing in another centre-back in January would cause more problems than it would solve.

This is understood to be based on the principle that a new face would require more time and adaptive work in training than youngsters Marc Bartra and Andreu Fontas, who are believed to be the options Vilanova is happy to fall back on over the coming months.
