Eight weeks for Puyol

Carles Puyol has been ruled out of action for a period of up to eight weeks after tests confirmed that the Barcelona defender has dislocated his elbow.

The veteran suffered the injury during yesterday’s Champions League win at Benfica, when landing awkwardly on his arm.

Tests since carried out have confirmed the injury as a dislocation of the elbow, meaning that the player now faces as long as two months out of action.

It is the latest injury for the 34-year-old, following on from knee surgery that ruled him out of Euro 2012 and a fractured cheekbone and separate knee injury that have both seen him miss several weeks of action this term. Last night’s appearance was in fact his first since recovering from the latter injury.

Barcelona play 11 games inside the next two months, including this weekend’s Clasico meeting with Real Madrid.
