Jemez: Rayo deserved to draw

Paco Jemez congratulated his Rayo Vallecano players for deserving to draw against Real Madrid, but conceded that silly mistakes saw them eventually lose.

The Madrid minnows lost out to their more established neighbours on Monday night, but Jemez was positive afterwards.

“Against the great teams sometimes it is not enough to compete well,” he reflected.

“But, I have nothing to criticise my players for. Instead, I must congratulate them on their effort and sacrifice.

“We were a little excited at first, but the game we have more or less controlled. And we were better in the second half, but they scored the second goal to decide the match. The match was much closer to a draw than a 0-2 at that time.”

The Coach reflected on what proved the difference between the sides on the night.

“Real are a great rival who do not need a big game to show that quality comes and that chances will be taken. They played the game they had to. They are deserved winners because they got two goals.

“What I disliked is that we made some mistakes that were too simple. And that is my fault. We have to work at this. I also didn’t like Jose Casado’s second yellow card, that was avoidable.”
