Javier Saviola clinically netted Malaga’s second in a 3-0 victory over Zenit St Petersburg, and is convinced of the team’s attributes for the Champions League.
“We have shown what we can do in the Champions League,” announced the Argentine striker in his post-match interview, after the Costa del Sol club cruised past the Russian champions at La Roselada.
“We scored very early on and kept up an intense pace, as we were aware that we had to do well in the first game.
“We were able to hold them off in the second half then, and we have proved we can beat a tough opponent like Zenit.
“We have to continue to make this phase of the competition favourable for us.”
The veteran forward was substituted for former Manchester City man Roque Santa Cruz with a quarter of an hour to play, and received his second standing ovation from the Malaga supporters since arriving in August.
“It is important people recognise the effort we put in, as we have now shown what we can do at the top European level.”
