Schuster: Real prioritising Europe

Former Real Madrid player and Coach Bernd Schuster believes the capital club will be prioritising the Champions League this season.

Los Blancos are already eight points behind Barcelona in the League table and Schuster, who played for the club between 1988 and 1990 and coached them during 2007-08, believes their eyes will be elsewhere in 2012-13.

“The Champions League is the priority for the team this season,” he told Kicker this week.

“The bad form in the League, however, will not go unnoticed, because the team want to go into Europe at their best. They have a super team and I see them as candidates to be champions of Europe.

“Last year they should have been in the final and it is the same for this year. Bayern and Barcelona are, for me, the only other two candidates.”

Schuster then reflected on one factor as to why he feels Real should be favourites, namely new signing Luka Modric.

“Modric will provide another jump in quality for the squad. Madrid needed another midfielder and the Croatian is who they have found.

“The team will play better and players like [Xabi] Alonso and [Mesut] Ozil will be even stronger.”
