Barcelona confirm Puyol absence

Barcelona has confirmed that defender Carles Puyol will be out of action for between four and six weeks after damaging knee ligaments on Saturday.

The 34-year-old pulled up in the second half of his side’s convincing 4-1 over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez last night.

In a statement on their official website on Sunday afternoon, La Blaugrana have confirmed that the Spanish international will be out for up to six weeks after tests revealed that he has damaged the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The club captain could potentially miss out on five matches between La Liga and the Champions League in the next month and a half.

Those games would include ties with Spartak Moscow, Granada, Sevilla, Benfica, and Real Madrid. Depending on the speed of his recovery he may also skip Week 8’s fixture with Deportivo de La Coruna.
