Jose Maria del Nido is impressed enough with the start Sevilla have made this season to declare them favourites for the weekend meeting with Real Madrid.
Real have run out 6-2 winners on each of the last two League meetings played against Los Rojiblancos at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, but Del Nido is confident and not just because the capital side are ‘not so strong in attack’.
“I’ve seen the last few games of Sevilla’s and I already said after the game at Vallecas…” he began to reporters today.
“For the first time in a while, Sevilla knows how to play, to play as a team, as a whole, and they are able to create many chances.
“I am convinced that my team will come out with the necessary intensity for our rival and that our fans will be up for the event as required.
“Based on today, I would bet that Sevilla will beat Madrid. I think that football at the beginning of the season is still developing, so there is not too much difference between teams.
“What is true, though, is that for us to defeat Madrid, we have to be sufficiently focused and put in enough effort so as not to slip up.”
The President was also keen to stress that his optimism is not going to be transformed into undue expectation.
“I do not want to raise the bar, because it would place improper pressure on the staffing levels we are set up for, nor do I believe that the budget for the squad requires us to be in the Champions League.”
