Miranda not leaving Atletico

Atletico Madrid defender Miranda has assured fans he wants to stay, despite being linked with a host of top European clubs.

The Brazil international played a starring role in the club's 4-1 win over Chelsea in the European Super Cup ten days ago, and has confirmed that he intends to stay with the Mattress Makers for a long time.

“There is no reason for me to leave,” the former Sao Paolo centre-back told Marca. “I am very happy. I love being here. I have a great friendship with my teammates and I think I can win a lot more with this shirt.

“The game in Monaco was one of the best days since I arrived at Atletico. People were very excited about the title. Now we have won that, we have to focus on doing well in the league.”

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao scored a hat-trick as Los Indios routed the Premier League side at the Stade Louis II, but it was Miranda who many claimed was the best player on the pitch.

“Falcao scored three goals, so it is normal that he took centre stage. But I did my job, which is to defend, and I think I did it well. I am in great shape and in great form. Each day I am getting better.

“The whole team was amazing. We did not stop for the entire game. The defensive work was absolutely extraordinary.

“It was a very good game, but I think we also did well against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League final. We play a lot of matches they same way we did in Monaco.”

The 27-year-old is enjoying working with boss Diego Simeone, who has led Atleti to two major trophies in his first 10 months in charge.

“He told us that if we were to beat a team like Chelsea, we had to be motivated and not give them any space to play. The Coach knows what we need and is doing a great job.

“He spoke to us in groups of four or five, and the day before, he gave us a talk as a whole group. He told us to think of the game, and know exactly what each of us had to do.”
