Xavi: Tito will win titles

Xavi Hernandez has given his backing to Tito Vilanova and declared an intention to play for perhaps another six years at international level.

“Tito will carry the team to many titles. When Pep was Coach Tito was very important. He has a very technical nature,” the midfielder told RAC1 today.

“He has things very clear. He always wants us playing 4-3-3. He fits perfectly and has very clear concepts. He’s very good, very prepared. He is a person with a great personality too, who knows a lot about football.”

The belief that Vilanova can win the titles is matched by his captain’s ambitions too.

“I’m thinking about Barca, in all three competitions, I want to keep winning titles. My motivation is football and to play for Barcelona. Now I have the role I have always desired I do not want to lose it. I’m very competitive and I like to win, to win for Barca because I am a cule.”

The player was asked about his fitness. Xavi will turn 33 midway through the season and has previously struggled with an Achilles problem.

“I’m good, better than last year. Am I looking towards Brazil 2014? Yes, I may even look to 2018 too.

“I do not shout, I’m not the one who decides. Physios, doctors and the Coach decide who plays. I listen to the doctors, even if I want to always play, to always be useful in every game.”

Xavi also expressed his delight at winning the Prince of Asturias Award for Sport today, and for sharing it with Iker Casillas.

“I have never cut relations with Iker, we always talk on the phone and our relationship is one of friendship and respect. With Iker I have had respect for many years and if there is a problem then we talk like civilised people.”
