‘Rayo can maintain Primera status’

Raul Martin Presa has reaffirmed the belief that Rayo Vallecano have a ‘competitive’ squad capable of keeping the team in the top flight once again.

The Madrid minnows have enjoyed a positive start to the 2012-13 campaign and from three rounds are currently undefeated.

However, Martin Presa is maintaining the pre-season objective of primarily avoiding relegation, something that he believes is more than possible with the squad now assembled.

“I think the team is competitive. We have two players per position, which, if we have the same misfortune with injuries as we did last year, will help us a lot,” he told reporters at the presentation for Manuel Arana.

“The squad is strong enough to maintain their place in this League. The Primera Division is a very difficult level and more for us, as we start from an economic disadvantage compared to all the rest of the clubs, but we believe that we are along the right lines and that going forward with this team we can overcome the challenge.

“It’s a tricky situation, because like last year we have had to build half the team again, but the situation is that, we have to face it and we look forward, forward and with our feet on the floor.”
