Lendoiro: Marchena had several offers

Deportivo de La Coruna President Augusto Cesar Lendoiro says Carlos Marchena had several offers before deciding on the Galicians.

Experienced centre-back Marchena, who has represented Spain 69 times and was a member of the 2010 World Cup-winning squad, signed for Depor this week and Lendoiro has revealed they were not the only club chasing him.

“There were some very important teams interested in him including Olympiacos, Real Mallorca and others from La Primera with good economic offers

“I had to give Carlos [Marchena] and his representative [Manuel Garcia Quilon] the push to come and play for Deportivo,” he told a Press conference.

The President wished the 33-year-old ‘every success’ in his career at Riazor, where Marchena has signed a contract for one season with a further option if he plays more than 30 La Liga matches.

“We are trying to put together the best team given the current circumstances surrounding Spanish football and the economic crisis were are going through,” added Lendoiro, who will now try to sign a top-class forward to complete Jose Luis Oltra’s squad.
