Mediapro to auction La Liga games

Mediapro, owners of almost all the rights to show live La Liga games, say they will put those broadcasting rights up for auction.

According to Sport, the media group will decided within the next two weeks which operators will transmit Primera and Segunda matches over the next two seasons.

The broadcasters themselves have until August 9 to bid for up to six different packages including the rights to show a top-flight fixture on open television, usually on a Saturday night, and one exclusive game for which they will be able to bid.

The group, headed by Catalan businessman Jaume Roura, said in a statement that it ´will pay attention to economic criteria and exclusivity of coverage when it comes to assessing any proposals`.

One obstacle the television companies will need to overcome is the growing clamour from La Liga clubs to change kick-off times, with some feeling the schedule is loaded in favour of the viewers as fans attending games can often find them ending just after midnight.
