Godall: Barca players ‘mercenaries’

A former Barcelona Vice-President has branded the club’s Spanish internationals ´mercenaries` following their Euro 2012 triumph.

Alfons Godall, who served under former President Joan Laporta between the years 2003 and 2010, made the accusations against the Barcelona players who helped Spain to a historic three consecutive major tournament wins.

Speaking via his account on social network Twitter, Godall pulled no punches in his assessment calling them 'stateless mercenaries'.

“Style and Barcelona’s stateless mercenaries helped Spain to win. Bloody hell! It’s our fault for not having our own state,” he tweeted.

It is not the first time Godall has used the internet to publicise his political views on Catalonia, having told Cadena Ser in January 2010 he would like to see the autonomous community field its own team.

“I would love it if we had our own national team playing in the World Cup against Spain,” he declared.
