‘Bale? Look at Robben…’

Former Real Madrid midfielder Uli Stielike suggests the club are partly to blame for Gareth Bale’s injuries. “Arjen Robben played far more for Bayern Munich…”

Bale faces several more weeks out with a thigh injury, despite only just returning from a calf problem, and Stielike – who won three Liga titles and a European Cup with Madrid between 1977 and 1985 – drew parallels between the No 11 and Robben, who endured similar fitness issues at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It’s a shame because when he’s at 100 percent physically, he forms a perfect strike partnership with Cristiano,” the German told AS.

“But of course, it’s also painful for the club because they’ve paid a lot of money for a player that they can’t put on the field.

“Does Bale lack courage? I don’t know, but Robben was often injured at Madrid and Bayern recovered him.

“He’s played far more for Bayern than he did for Madrid, and it’s equally necessary to find out why that is.

“What advice would I give to Bale? More so to his club. They should let him visit three or four trusted doctors.

“If three of the four are in agreement, they should go that way…”
