Herrera scoops MUFC gong

Spanish international midfielder Ander Herrera has been named Manchester United's Player of the Year for 2016-17, ending David De Gea’s run of victories.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper – who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer – had won each of the last three awards for the Red Devils, but his spell of dominance has now been broken by the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder.

“It's very special for me to win this award because when you see the list of winners, you realise how important it is," Herrera said upon accepting the award.

"And I stopped the record of David!”

The Bilbao-native has appeared in 49 matches for the Red Devils this season and his fine form earned him his first international cap against England in November.
