Saul Niguez’s header ultimately proved the difference in the tie as Leicester were left needing to score three goals, with the Foxes’ only response coming through Jamie Vardy.

Atleti opted to shut up shop in midfield by naming centre-back Josema Gimenez alongside enforcer Gabi, with Yannick Carrasco moving alongside Antoine Griezmann up top.

Leicester, meanwhile, were able to call on Wes Morgan in central defence again after the captain passed a late fitness test to prove his recovery from a back problem.

A closely-contested game saw Atleti control the opening stages, before Leicester came out fighting in the second half, ultimately enjoying more of the ball and almost twice as many shots on goal as the visitors.

Saul, just a couple of days after his shock revelation that he had played the last two years with a urine infection, was completely unmarked in the Foxes box when he guided home Filipe's left-wing cross with his head.

The goal was the midfielder’s third of the season in the Champions League, with all of them coming away from home.

A headed clearance then fell straight to Riyad Mahrez, but his first-time volley was straight at Jan Oblak.

Leicester made two changes for the second half as Shinji Okazaki and Yohan Benalouane were replaced by Ben Chilwell and Leonardo Ulloa.

Indeed, the former made an instant impact. His volleyed cross deflected in front of Jamie Vardy, who coolly sidefooted into the roof of Oblak’s net.

Yet that was as good as it got for Leicester, whose European adventure sadly seems over for a long time. Atleti, on the other hand, booked their third semi-final in four years.
