Monchi: Abroad when I leave Sevilla

Monchi insists he will only leave Sevilla for a club outside of Spain, “fell in love” with Jorge Sampaoli and that Vitolo “may be the best signing”.

Monchi announced his desire to follow Unai Emery out of Sevilla, amidst reported interest from the likes of Milan, Everton and Manchester United, but was not released from his contract, yet he was delighted the side fought to keep him.

“If I leave Sevilla at some point, it’ll be for a club outside of Spain,” the sporting director told Marca.

“I decided to leave just before the end of the season. It was clear what I wanted to do, but it was delayed.

“The club told me that I had to stay and I was delighted.

“We began planning for the squad [with Emery] but then an offer from PSG came.

“I have only words of gratitude and pride for having shared three-and-a-half years with him.

“For us, it was a very abrupt change, but we took the opportunity to change our philosophy.

“I fell in love with [Sampaoli’s] way of working and how he gets results. I’m convinced that he will lead Sevilla to success again.

“[Vitolo] participated in [Spain’s first] goal, won the second and was at a good level.

“He’s growing by leaps and bounds and a very important player for us and hopefully also the Spanish national team.

“He’s different to the others in the Spain squad. He can offer drive, work, play between the lines…

“There was interest from big clubs, but he wanted to continue at Sevilla. He may have been the best signing of the summer.”
