Enrique questions Supercopa need

Luis Enrique was pleased Barcelona beat Sevilla to the Supercopa de Espana but questioned the need to hold the showpiece at all.

Barca were domestic double winners in 2015-16 and added the Spanish Super Cup to their haul with a 5-0 aggregate win over Los Rojiblancos, Enrique questioning after the second leg why the tie was even played considering his side’s dominance last season.

“We all like trophies, as the intensity of the players demonstrates. I don’t really understand why the Supercopa was held. When there is one winner of La Liga and the Copa del Rey it makes no sense to play the Supercopa,” Lucho argued, AS reports.

“Clearly there is ‘business’ but for me it doesn’t make sense. The opponent put is in trouble but we were deserving winners.”

Enrique then considered if the Supercopa would be better decided in a one-off game, as is the case for England’s Community Shield.

“I’m not in the meetings of the clubs. This works and we can talk about other things for the future that can be complications. Football can’t be stuck in the past or on archaic methods. We have to improve, evolve, the players and the Coaches have to and so do the authorities. If not, it’s rubbish.”
