Emery confirms Banega exit

Unai Emery has confirmed that Ever Banega will leave Sevilla as the midfielder “shed tears” after Sunday’s defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final.

Banega is out of contract this summer and has been heavily linked with Inter, and the Argentine seemingly ended his Sevilla career on a bad note as he was sent off in the dying embers of normal time for a last-man foul on Neymar, Barca going on to win 2-0 in extra time.

“I have great relationship with Banega, one of love and hate,” the Coach said after the game.

“I love him because he’s a lad who loves his football, endears himself to you and gives you all of his footballing ability, which is what he’s done with Sevilla.

“Banega shed tears in the dressing room [after the game] because he’s going.

“[On the final], our approach was to win in 90 or 120 minutes and compete under any circumstances.

“With 11 [men], we were always in a position to control the game, and we had the capacity to do damage in attack.

“In the second half, we had two good chances but lacked freshness.

“Still, I appreciate [our performance] as we competed, having been better [than Barca] at times, but ultimately we were unbalanced in equal measure.

“I congratulate Barcelona, but also to my players and the team.”
