Varane hails Madrid resilience

Raphael Varane praised Real Madrid for “suffering as a team” during Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

Karim Benzema’s brace was enough to hand Los Blancos their first win at the new San Mames, despite Sabin Merino’s equaliser sandwiched in between, and the defender singled out his side’s never-say-die attitude as a key factor in their success.

“[The game] was very difficult. We ran a lot, but we’re happy,” he said after the game.

“We worked very well, and although we suffered, we did so as a team.

“We gave a lot, and it’s always difficult here, but we played with great intensity and responded well.

“[On Athletic’s equaliser], I think it came from a bit of both [us easing off and them deserving it].

“They played with great intensity. We were a little tired, but we pulled through.

“[On Benzema’s scoring start], he’s having a very good start to the season.

“We hope it stays that way. The team are working very well, serious and in an organised fashion, and the most important thing is to continue like this.

“[On Barca losing 4-1 to Celta Vigo], La Liga isn’t easy as there are many good teams [competing]. It’s important to have consistency like we’re having.”
