Simeone: Scraping wins vital

Diego Simeone says he hopes to “see more goals during times of struggle” following Atletico Madrid's 1-0 victory over Las Palmas in La Liga on Saturday.

Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the game at the Vicente Calderon, but the Coach admits the new boys were always in contention – a situation he is keen to address for future matches.

“The game was never completely closed. They played a very serious game and were never out of the running,” he said after the game.

“They made a few chances, which [Jan] Oblak saved. It was an interesting game from Las Palmas.

“Yannick [Ferreira-Carrasco]? I decided that some would play and others would be on the bench.

“[Angel] Correa is a player who can make the difference in the final third. He turns very well in the box, is very dangerous and has the vision to exploit small spaces.

“He's much better near the box than in the middle of the park. He's audacious and fearless – things you need at his level.

“When one plays without fear, as he did, they'll have a place in the team.

“Overall, it was a good game from the team, especially Oliver. We're very happy about winning our first game at home.

"The pitch was bad [on Saturday], but we can't say that against Barcelona [in Week 3].

“We'll continue looking in the direction of our rivals – Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal.

"Hopefully, we'll see more goals during times of struggle.”
