Coentrao nearing Benfica return?

The Portuguese Press are reporting that Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao is closing in on a return to Benfica.

According to Correio da Manha, only an agreement over wages separates Los Blancos and the Portuguese champions, with a season-long loan already in the works.

Benfica are also understood to have accelerated their move for the 27-year-old in order to beat off competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

Coentrao joined Madrid from Benfica in 2011 for a reported €30m but has failed to displace Marcelo throughout his time in the Spanish capital and recently rubbished reports linking him with the Eagles’ arch-rivals Sporting Lisbon.

He completed 72 minutes of Portugal’s 3-2 victory over Armenia in Euro 2016 qualifying on Saturday, which featured a third successive Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick.
