Bartomeu ‘expects Enrique to stay’

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu is confident Luis Enrique will remain as Coach for next season.

Speculation has persisted that Enrique will leave Camp Nou despite a successful first year in charge in which he guided Barca to success in the League and Copa del Rey and the Champions League final.

“I know what he says in Press conferences but I have no doubt he will continue. I don’t think he wants to go,” Bartomeu said on an appearance on El Larguero, Mundo Deportivo reports.

“We’re going to [the Champions League final in] Berlin with all the enthusiasm. It’s a highly sought-after final.

“Barca have the best players in the world and will try to lift the trophy. It won’t be easy. Juventus have a super team and we have to respect them.

“We’ll go well prepared, with the ability to win, but it will be difficult.

“The double is spectacular. Winning the Champions League would be an honour.”

Bartomeu, who also questioned the possible punishments for whistling the national anthem prior to the Copa del Rey final, while stressing Barca’s ‘respect for all symbols,’ also discussed the situation with Dani Alves, Douglas and Thomas Vermaelen.

Bartomeu went so far as to suggest Douglas and Vermaelen are akin to new signings for the coming season.

“I wasn’t bothered by Alves’ Press conference,” the President said of the episode in which the right-back excoriated the club.

“There is a good relationship. Dani has the proposal of a renewal for two years plus another optional year on the table.

“We’re meeting with his representative and if he stays, that’d be perfect.

“Both Douglas and Vermaelen had good feelings after [Deportivo La Coruna]. They’re signings for July.

“We can sign players, we just can’t register them.”
