Arbeloa still a Mourinho disciple

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa says he is still a Jose Mourino devotee despite the Portuguese having left the club for Chelsea.

Spain international Arbeloa caused a stir two years ago when he accused the Madrid dressing room of self-interest and zero commitment when Mourinho was in charge, while he freely admits he is still a follower of his methods.

“I tried to explain on Onda Cero radio what it is like to be a ‘Mourinhista’,” explained Arbeloa in an interview with El Chiringuito.

“That’s not to idolise Jose. It’s a way of saying things, of moving forward, and not be afraid of who you are. I try to be as much of a ‘Mourinhista’ as possible.

“Everyone has their own way of working and Mourinho believes in picking the players that are working best. He knows I am a fighter and he doesn’t need to motivate me.

“I spoke to him last Friday. He’s happy and content in London because his family are happy and there isn’t the persecution he and his kid got here. Professionally he has a great team and is doing well.”

Arbeloa also spoke of his relationship with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, with whom he had a much publicised falling-out and at the time remarked that “it’s easier to be friends on Facebook”.

“That matter is now over. It’s like a snowball that starts off slowly and keeps going and going. You’ve got to be the best of teammates and the best of players for the Coach.

“I’d just like to leave it at that. I don’t understand why it keeps being brought up. There is no problem between us. Things happen over time.”
