New York still calling for Xavi

New York City sporting director Claudio Reyna has vowed that the club will not abandon their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez.

The 34-year-old, whose contract with La Blaugrana expires in the summer of 2016, had been linked with a move to the United States last summer but eventually decided to stay at Camp Nou.

However, the former Rangers and Manchester City man insists the newly-founded American outfit retain hopes of pairing the Spain legend with fellow star Frank Lampard in the middle of the park.

“It’s true that we tried to sign him [last summer], but next year we need new designated players,” he told TV3.

“The door remains open [for Xavi]. We won’t close the door on Xavi before next year.”
