Valverde condemns bus attack

Athletic Bilbao Coach Ernesto Valverde has said the fans who attacked the Espanyol bus do not represent the Basque club.

The Espanyol coach was pelted with stones upon its arrival at San Mames for the Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg, the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Valverde considered the contest after the match and condemned the actions of the small section of supporters responsible.

“It’s logical Espanyol are favourites. We have to score on their field. The tie is open as a result,” he said, Marca reports.

“I worry about the calendar. Espanyol have five days to recover and we have three, plus a game against Torino.

“I feel bad knowing what happened [with the bus]. We treat people as we would be treated and those who have done that do not represent the fans of Athletic.”

Valverde also confirmed injuries suffered by Carlos Gurpegi and Xabi Etxeita, the former going down with a minor thigh problem and the latter suffering a dislocated shoulder.
