Agirretxe: ‘La Real must improve’

Real Sociedad striker Imanol Agirretxe maintains the Basque outfit need to show improvement for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old, who has netted just twice this term – the last on November 9 last year against Atletico Madrid – believes that with Carlos Vela poised to miss the next two months through injury the other players in David Moyes’ team must make a greater contribution.

“Personally speaking, my figures have not been good and I need to improve and get the goals which will bring us victories,” he told a Press conference at the club’s Zubieta training complex.

“I’m very much looking forward to the Celta Vigo game at Anoeta on Saturday, but it’s obvious when you don’t score and the team loses, or doesn’t win, it hurts.

“With Carlos out it is very important we all pull together and those of us up front have the responsibility of scoring. We already had that before he got injured and we have it now, but so far we have not produced.”

Agirretxe, who has been with La Real his entire professional career, also responded to club President Jokin Aperribay’s words this week that the players must try even harder.

“We had already heard those words even without Vela being injured. A squad that was at the top which then finds itself with problems near the bottom can always give more, because we’ve shown that before.

“When we talk about football we talk about goals and when we talk about goals we always look to the strikers. This year we’ve struggled in creating and scoring goals and have not achieved good results.

“We’ve not been able to get away from the bottom part of the table, but we are a team and as a team we have room for improvement,” he insisted.

The Txuri-urdin are currently 13th in the table on 22 points, four clear of the relegation zone.
